We Go Together: High School Production of Grease Builds Community
The High School Drama department recently brought Grease to the ISA World Theatre, a joyful, high-energy production that filled the stage with music and teamwork. The three-night run was a vibrant celebration of students’ talent and dedication, as well as the spirit of collaboration that defines our school community.
With nearly 50 students involved, this production represents one of the largest student-led projects in recent years. Thirty performers from Grades 9 to 12 made up the cast, supported by a backstage and design team who worked for months to create costumes, props and set elements. Together, they gained first-hand experience of the preparation and shared responsibility that go into producing a major theatrical performance.
For many students, Grease was more than a chance to perform: it was an opportunity for personal growth. Through the process, and being given positions of responsibility and shared ownership, they learned to push beyond their comfort zones. Collaboration across grades encouraged new friendships and confidence, as students supported one another both on stage and behind the scenes.
“This production was a collaboration of the arts and the whole community,” says Drama teacher Susie Shreeve. “From the music to the set design, to the students leading backstage and on stage, everyone contributed. It was a chance for us to come together in a different way and make something truly special.”
Students involved in the production embodied many of the qualities of the IB Learner Profile, demonstrating their ability to task risks and communicate. Students took creative risks through choreography, performance and design and learned to express themselves with confidence. In doing so, they developed a deeper understanding of what it means to collaborate towards a shared vision.
Behind the scenes, the project also demonstrated how the wider ISA community comes together to support student experiences. The music, art, drama and film departments joined forces with the Facilities Team, who constructed an ambitious set complete with four moving staircases. The PTA partnered to sell tickets, and even during the October break, students volunteered to help paint and build the set.
From the thoughtful intensity of last year’s A Monster Calls to the upbeat energy of Grease, the ISA Drama programme continues to offer students diverse opportunities to explore their passions and talents. Each production helps students learn more about themselves and others and allows them to build their confidence, resilience and explore their passions.
Just like the show’s finale song, We Go Together, this production reminded us that the ISA community shines brightest when it learns and grows together.
