Alumni Spotlight: Yllan Diehl
“ISA shaped me in ways I never expected, both academically and personally.”
Meet Yllan Diehl, an ISA Class of 2023 graduate who is studying Hospitality Business at EHL Lausanne.
What were your most memorable experiences at ISA?
My senior year was truly unforgettable. I have fond memories of ToK with Matt Lynch and Film class with Jennifer Motre—both classes left a lasting impact on me. But what made my time at ISA so special were the little moments outside the classroom: the fun chaos of senior week with its themed outfits, the excitement of our senior trip, and the emotional milestone of graduation. These are memories I will always cherish.
What advice or insights do you have for our current ISA students?
Cherish every moment of high school—it’s more special than you realize. Once you graduate, you’ll truly understand how unique this time was. Being surrounded by your closest friends every day is something you won’t experience in the same way again. The little things—sharing lunch, goofing around in math class, biking to school together in the mornings—make it unforgettable. So embrace it all—laugh, learn, and make the most of the journey.
How did your time at ISA impact your life?
ISA shaped me in ways I never expected, both academically and personally. Moving from the German system and adapting to learning English was a challenge, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Beyond academics, ISA helped me develop invaluable social skills. I’m especially grateful to my teachers—not only for their guidance in the classroom but also for helping me grow as a person and a professional.
What advice do you have for others looking to enter into your field of work?
There’s no need to rush. After high school, you have your whole life ahead of you, and if you’re unsure about your path, taking a gap year or two to explore your interests can be incredibly valuable. Don’t worry about starting later than your friends—what truly matters is making a confident decision. Taking the time to find the right path will always be worth it.
The ISA Alumni Spotlight series aims to showcase the journeys of individuals in our student, teacher and parent alumni communities. We ask them to reflect on how ISA made an impact on their life, and to share their advice on how to carry the mission of international understanding.
