Mayoral Visit to ISA

By Rob Spies

On the 28th of August 2002 the Mayor of Amsterdam, Mr. Job Cohen LL.B, and his wife Mrs. Cohen–Lodeweges, visited ISA. Together with two Amsterdam Councillors, the couple was welcomed by the Director of the School, Steve Bannell and the Vice-Chairman of the Board, Mr. Leo van Os.

The Mayor had requested that no special arrangements should be made and that it was a working visit so, after a brief introduction in the Director’s office, the Mayoral delegation was shown around by the Communication and PR Manager Mr. Rob Spies.

Mr. and Mrs. Cohen showed particular interest in the international education provided at ISA. With both guests having had a former career in education - Mr. Cohen was Vice-Chancellor of Maastricht University and Secretary of State for Education and Mrs. Cohen was a teacher at a secondary school - it did not take long before the Mayor participated in the teaching of a history lesson.

The Dutch Department was also paid a special visit and the delegation was welcomed with some Dutch songs. As newly appointed Chairman of the National Committee for the European Year of the Handicapped 2003, Mr Cohen expressed his interest in ISA's Community Service programme.

On behalf of ISA, Director Steve Bannell thanked Mr Cohen and his delegation for their visit. The Mayor was extremely impressed by the high standard of our education clearly on offer and the fantastic atmosphere he sensed when walking through the corridors, visiting the classrooms and talking to pupils and staff.
